Mormonism is not 'another' form of Christianity.
There are vast and irreconcilable differences. As I see it, these are the critical issues that separate Christianity and Mormonism (LDS): God, Jesus, salvation and forgiveness of sins.
God
In Christianity, God is a self-existent being – from eternity past to eternity future. (Psalm 90:2, Isaiah 44:6) God spoke everything into existence. (Genesis 1:1-31) In Mormonism, God is a man the flesh and bone (D&C 130:22) who once lived on another planet (Abraham 2:2-3). He and his wife created billions of spirit children to populate the Earth. It’s their reward for being godly people on their home planet. (There is no specific revelation to Smith, however it is integral to the LDS doctrine.)
Jesus
In Christianity, Jesus is one with God - part of the godhead (John 10:30, John 1:1); God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit. In Mormonism, Jesus, spirit brother of Lucifer (Moses 4:1-4), is a completely separate person from God (conceived when God had physical sex with Mary) (1 Nephi 11:18).
Salvation
In Christianity, salvation (the forgiveness of sins) is a freely given gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is the grace of God; it requires only belief in Jesus... faith (Romans 3:28). In Mormonism, salvation is also a free gift from God. It is granted when the believer has done “all he can” to make himself perfect - has done many works to prove himself worthy (2 Nephi 25:23).
Forgiveness of Sin
In Christianity, the sins of a believer – all sins: past, present and future - are forgiven by the grace of God the instant a believer comes to faith (Acts 22:16, 1 John 1:9). In Mormonism, one must repent of each sin. If he commits that sin again (in deed or in thought), every sin he has ever committed is unforgiven, he will die in those sins and must, of course, lose his grace (D&C 42:26-26). A Christian has immediate and permanent assurance of salvation. A Mormon has neither - ever.
Eternal Father vs. Heavenly Father
In Christianity, the Bible stresses the eternality of God the father with phrases like ‘from everlasting to everlasting’ (Psalm 90:2). In Mormonism, there is a process of attaining God status (a progressive maturation process of god-ness) and that the process and Heavenly Father had a been distinct beginning; [ Heavenly Father was created by his god and Heavenly Father became our God by fulfilling the scriptures laid down by his god ].
A Liar From the Beginning
LDS members can become gods... as LDS President Lorenzo Snow said, “As man is, God once was. As God is, man may be.”
Become a God? This is the same lie the serpent told Eve in the garden [
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.] Genesis 3:4-5... and was the downfall of Lucifer himself. "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High " Isaiah 14:13-14.
